Reviving a Heat-Stricken Calf

Newborn calves are more delicate than you might think. They do not control their internal temperatures well and can die from cold that wouldn’t bother an older cow. At the other extreme was Elsie, a calf born during a recent heatwave.

It's a Girl!

Fern, a heifer (girl) calf, was born on May 24th. Here she is with her brother, Thunder, and Mom, Black Diamond.

To Name A Calf

My bovines used to be identified by a number. At birth, we’d put ear tags with unique numbers on each calf. The problem was that numbers are not only hard for me to remember, but they also don’t capture personalities.
